Below we provide a guide for our Asphalt Paving methods, and what you can expect with a quality job from Asphalt Ottawa.
The Paving Process
- Step 1: Assessment
- Step 2: Locates
- Step 3: Subbase
- Step 4: Asphalt Resurfacing
- Step 5: Finishing Touches
The process of paving an Asphalt Driveway starts with the subbase. We begin by testing the subbase and determining its integrity. If it is cracked and shattered, the subbase needs to be redone.
Before any work is done the current driveway must take a quality assessment. We look to answer the following questions
- Is the paving subbase strong enough to support a new layer?
- Was there water seepage or winter thaw that compromised the foundation?
- Are plant roots or other elements destroying the asphalt layer?
- Is there alligator cracking or uneven bumping on the asphalt? Is the asphalt layer level?
- Can a basic resurfacing work to restore the paving?
All these questions are important in determining the next steps in the paving process. If there are underlying issues that need to be dealt with prior to work, we make sure to diagnose and resolve them to ensure lasting paving.
We take into account financial considerations and make sure that we provide flexibility and accountability in all our work.
Once we have the green light to begin groundwork, we work to ensure that safety procedures are followed, and city guidelines respected. Before we do any digging we research the nearby locates to ensure that no pipes or hazards are encountered. Locates are markings which identify utility lines and pipes based on records or electronic equipment. We perform this procedure to ensure proper safety.
In cases where the subbase is stable, we grind and compact the top layer to provide a smooth surface for the asphalt layer. If the subbase is compromised we start by grinding further down into the subbase and restarting the driveway from scratch
Your Asphalt Paving must be able to properly driveway must be able to properly drain water. This is accomplished by grading and sloping the subbase. Water is redirected from the paving into a grassy or sewer drained area.
Similarly, the subbase can be compacted and compressed to get it stable and winter resistant to lay the Asphalt Layer on top. Once the foundation has been prepared, if any soft spots are found they will be filled in and compressed before moving on the asphalt layering. The process of grinding the subbase is called milling.
Once the subbase is strong and stable a binder layer is added. The binder layer consists of aggregate mixed with oil, conferring strength and stability. This is the final material added to the subbase before the Proof Roll. During the Proof Roll an Asphalt Roller moves across the surface of the subbase to test if the surface can support the new asphalt. The ensures that the subbase will not sink or buckle in the future. Soft or weak spots are repaired by digging several feet beneath the soft spots and replacing the soil with strong aggregate material.
For Asphalt Relayering we use our high quality paving equipment to ensure a strong and smooth overlay. Depending on the job, we give instructions on how to ensure the asphalt binds strongly so no sinking or bumps occur.
After we finish laying the Asphalt, the entire paved surface is rolled to compact and smooth the pavement. For every job we make sure to clean the project and leave your paving and surrounding area in tiptop shape. We give specific instruction to ensure a secure and strong bond, as asphalt is vulnerable for the first weeks after job completion. We always recommend maintenance checkups and sealcoating to ensure long-lasting stability.
Paving Equipment and Machinery
Asphalt Paving is complicated and requires sophisticated machinery. Below is a partial list of some of the machines used in the Asphalt Paving Process:
Milling Machines
Milling machines are similar to flatliners, in that they remove surface material. Unlike a flatliner, a Milling Machine will leave the surface rough and abrasive. This surface can effectively bind to aggregate and for effective paving.
Sealer
This machine is used to effectively coat the asphalt layer with a strong protective sealcoat to block water and wind from eroding the paved surface. This specialized machine coats paved surfaces evenly and ensures sealcoating layer penetrates deep into the paved surface.
Sweepers
Sweepers help remove excess material from the surface after the surface has been compacted and smoothed. After the subbase has been steadied, the excess debris must be removed, so that the aggregate and binding mixture can work. Sweepers are also used after the job has been essentially finished to help remove excess and loose material.
Screed Machines
Screed is the name used for the material lying on the asphalt paved surface. Screed machines are used to flatten material below and are essential to Asphalt Paving. Screeds use low, heated plates to flatten and smooth asphalt at variable widths. Originally introducted into the market in the 1930s screeds changed the way asphalt paving is done, and have allowed for the asphalt paving business to scale to both residential and commercial applications.
Graders
After Milling, machines called graders are often used to smooth out the surface. This prepares the ground for the Asphalt Layer to be poured. Graders are used to pitch the driveway slope in a certain direction for effective water drainage.
Stabilizers/Reclaimers
Stabilizer machines are equipped with large rotor blades used to pulverize old pavement. When used, this machine can mix new material subbase providing it with strength and rigidity.
Flat Liners
Flatliners are used when your driveway is mostly stable and requires a shallow resurfacing. This machine removes bumps from the top layer to make a smooth surface.
Rollers
Rollers are used to compact and proof the paved surface. It is used to expose soft spots in the subbase, and to compress the Paved Asphalt Layer. This tool is a staple for any asphalt paving company, and is often run over the surface many times over.
